Abouthom.es Girls: Lesley on her new “Gig” and Accountability

September 6, 2011 in N Central MA, Western MAby Lesley

Diane as Snow White Abouthom.es Girls: Lesley on her new Gig and AccountabilityHi Diane!  Today I shot the first episode of the TREW Show.  It is a web based program and TREW stands for The Real Estate Wrapup.  My co-host, Nick, and I will be shooting once a week and sharing short segments on unique listings, current events, staging tips and all things real estate.  The show will be up soon, but it is only one of the many great programs featured on the Businews Channel…take a peek!  Nick and I are both real estate agents in Western Massachusetts, but our program is not geographically based…anyone thinking of buying or selling a home could benefit!

In other news, I saw your adorable picture on Facebook this weekend…super cute!  Now if only you could make that little Twitter bird work the vacuum, you would really be a social media rock star!

Glad to see that you are cleaning up and getting ready to put the house on the market, but it seems you have been “getting ready” for awhile!  Perhaps it is time for some accountability to give the process a kick in the pants?  Now is a great time to get your home on the market…the fall season is often busier than the spring in New England AND the interest rates are off the charts low, right now!  I know now is a great time to sell your house in Western Massachusetts and I imagine it is in Central Massachusetts, as well!

I think it would be interesting if you share your marketing tips and plans with our viewers…give a birds eye view!

Peace out Homescouts!

Diane, I am still in Florida because Hurricane Irene was busy messing up New England and we can’t get back to Massachusetts until late Wednesday.

We are using our extra time in Florida to hang out with the amazing Debbie Kirkland and reflecting on what an amazing time we had at RE BarCamp Orlando and the Florida REALTORS conference. Both events were run beautifully, but the best part was the opportunity to visit with friends and share the love of social media by teaching.

It was an awesome time visiting with old friends and new and attaching a hug on friends who we hadn’t yet met face to face, but already know and love. People must get tired of listening to me gush about how powerfully social media has impacted my life, but what the HAIL, I am going to say it again….without social media I would be missing out on so many gifts of friendship, business and love. I am so grateful to Debbie Kirkland and the Florida REALTORS for having both you and I teach and speak about social media for real estate.

We also had a few running gags this week, like T-Rex and planking and all of us Twitterqueens ran around in tiaras for a good amount of the time! Some of said Twitterqueens may or may not have eaten crickets, too….you will have to watch to discover the answer to that!

Well…that is enough typing: watch this and have a giggle!

AboutHom.es Girls: Diane on Action Items and Language

August 27, 2011 in Central MA, Massachusetts, N Central MAby Diane Guercio

This is my back home video. I am sad to have had to leave the wonderful people of Florida and the fun at REBar Camp Orlando and the Flkorida Realtors Convention.

My action items:

  • Listen! That’s how you learn.
  • Practice what you learn. That’s how you grow.
  • Speak the language. That’s how you spread the joy.

Getting ready for the hurricane here, and trying to learn from everything that I saw and all of the people that I connected with in Florida. Hoping that all of my friends have a safe journey home.

Hi Diane! I am back from my daughter’s national dance competition and ready to take on the long neglected issue of my health and wellness.

Today I did my first workout in over SEVEN years. It was tough and I am still feeling it hours later, but I am committed to making this lifestyle change to take care of myself. As a working mom and REALTOR, the first things to go are the things for ourselves, but I am going to make this priority because I want to feel good about myself.  This issue isn’t exclusive to the real estate industry, I am sure that most working moms can relate.

My good friends Jill and Barb at Expert Fitness in Westfield, MA got me going on the gym part of this plan today. They helped my ten year old recover from her broken leg so she could dance in her nationals and now they are helping me take control of my fitness.

I want you and the Abouthom.es viewers to keep me motivated and hold me accountable!

AboutHom.es Girls: Diane at Trap Falls

July 17, 2011 in Massachusetts, N Central MAby Diane Guercio

Hi Lesley,

I loved your Mountain Climbing video! You are right – the best things DO require effort.

It was hot today and I slipped out for an hour to Willard Brook, to the waterfall there.

The kids and I have spent a lot of time at Willard Brook over the years – there is a sandy beach on the other side of the road. We love Trap Falls, though, and I used to fill the trunk with charcoal and a cooler full of provisions and we would spend the day there. The kids would swim, try to catch fish, eat, make smores, and hike.

The thing I love is this little gem is right in my backyard. It is literally less than 20 minutes from my house.

Oh, and watch the video all the way to the end to see my son reminding me why you don’t leave your video camera around the house untended. icon smile AboutHom.es Girls: Diane at Trap Falls

Diane, this weekend I went hiking to the top of Mt. Tom in Holyoke, MA.  It was a beautiful (although a bit hot) day to be outside and it felt great to be getting some exercise.  Boy did I get exercise!   We went up what used to be the Mt Tom ski area’s trails to the summit.

I did really well until the very end, when I didn’t think I could go up anymore…it was steep and hot and I was exhausted!  I kept reminding myself that I come from good German Alps climbing stock and compared to the tiniest Alp, Mt. Tom is a mere bump!

The views were worth the exhaustion…the wildflowers and whispering grasses.  The creaking, singing sounds of nature as bugs hum and chirp, birds sing and cry and the wind blows and rustles.  We saw several large hawks along the way, too.

Mt. Tom closed their ski and wave pool operations in 1998 and the buildings and grounds look like a condemned ghost town.  We hiked up what was a ski slope, I think it was Pump House and then Big Tom Run to the point where the summit chair lift used to drop skiiers.

The views of the valley were amazing as we could look out to the buildings in Springfield, Holyoke, South Hadley and beyond.

I have been working on getting into better shape and this hike was certainly a good workout!  It also reminded me that the best things are the things you work hard to reach.

I hope you had a great weekend, too!

Here are some informational links about Mt. Tom in case you want to know more about this Western Massachusetts destination.

The Swimsuit Edition… and my Mondays in Massachusetts contribution

Hi Lesley-

I have been working on the details of getting my home ready for market, and thinking about what you said about the big picture things. It is so easy to pigeon-hole yourself into areas that you don’t need to be by not examining all of the options.

Anyway, that got me to thinking about community and how much your community defines you.  I remember the influence that my community had on me when I was growing up. We spent all summer at Little Pond in Bolton – the town where I spent my first 18 years.  We would swim underwater, when we got older, from Little Rock to Big Rock (I swear, because if I was making this up it would be more exciting) and you could see the boy scout camp across the water. That was where Little Diane spent summer.

My kids have become regulars in different summer watering holes over the years. Some of them like swimming pools – we have a great town pool in Shirley at Benjamin Hill Recreation Center – but most have preferred lake swimming.

To make those children happy, we have done a lot of day-tripping. For several years, we tried to get to every state park with swimming within a 45 minute drive, and some of our favorites were Willard Brook in Ashby/Townsend (there is a beach, but my kids liked the waterfall there too, and you can do cookouts at the waterfall) and Leominster State Forest (again, you can cook out). We also spent a lot of time at Mirror Lake in Devens (featured in the video), which is not a state park but is lovely and allows canoeing and fishing too, if you like those activities.

So I am slowly whittling away at my to-do list, but I might get some sun today too. icon smile AboutHomes Girls Diane Swimsuit Edition

I know you have a pool at your condo complex, but I believe that you have a lot of nice recreation areas near where you live too. What do you like to do in the summer?

Other places we like:

Walden Pond, Concord – although going there as a teenager used to upset me.  I couldn’t help that think Thoreau would be chasing all of those people out of there with a stick

Pearl Hill

Swimming hole at Squannacook in Groton

Purgatory Chasm – no swimming, but a lot of fun – here is an old post I wrote about it, and there is a link out to the story of One-Eyed Jack

and in addition to Leominster State Forest, Leominster has a community pool on Viscaloid Ave.

Abouthom.es Girls: Lesley on Choosing Your Next Home

June 28, 2011 in Western MAby Lesley

Diane is right, you have to prioritize your needs and wants before you can go house hunting.
714327 door knob Abouthom.es Girls: Lesley on Choosing Your Next Home

First and foremost before you can consider chooshing your next home, of course, is price.  How much home are you comfortable affording?

Once you have that narrowed down it is time to get to the nitty gritty: neighborhood.  Where do you want to live?  No sense shopping in areas where you won’t be happy, so determine your neighborhoods early on.

Then you get to the finer details: how many bedrooms do you need, do you want a garage, is the acreage important to you?

When I was house shopping I did all of the above and I was really struggling to find the right place.  One house was great except it had no garage.  Another had the garage, but I didn’t like the area and so on….

My mother stepped in and asked me at that point if I was looking at condominiums.  I argued that I didn’t want a condo and she dragged to me to see the condominium where I now live.  Here is her advice along with some of mine: (ps. stay tuned to the end, we are going to play a little “drinking game”)

Mondays in Massachusetts: Bring Your Own Restaurant, Holyoke, MA

June 27, 2011 in Western MAby Lesley

There is this cool movement in Holyoke, MA called “Bring Your Own Restaurant”. This moveable feast is in its third season and is a unique experience.

I attended my first BYOR in May and created a short video about the experience:

This Friday, July 1st is the next BYOR at the “Dingle Park” at the top of 391 at Jackson and Maple Streets in Holyoke, MA from 7pm – 11pm. This is also the Holyoke Fireworks and they hope to be able to see the display from this location. They hold these events every 2 weeks during the summer months, so check their schedule!

For more information you can visit their Facebook Event Page.
